His advice basically boils down to the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Install a personal firewall;\n<li>Install anti-virus software and keep it up-to-date;\n<li>Get rid of Outlook, Outlook Express and Internet Explorer &#8211; replace with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/\">Mozilla-based product<\/a>;\n<li>Don&#8217;t use MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger;\n<li>Replace Microsoft Office, and its components such as Word, Excel, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openoffice.org\">OpenOffice<\/a>, a free equivalent;\n<li>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lavasoft.nu\/\">AdAware<\/a>, software which checks your system for &#8216;undesirables&#8217;, such as spyware;\n<li>Ultimately, go the whole hog and get rid of Windows entirely, and use a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.debian.org\">nice Linux distribution<\/a>.\n<\/li>\n<\/li>\n<\/li>\n<\/li>\n<\/li>\n<\/li>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A colleague at work has drawn up a very good checklist explaining how to keep a Windows PC safe and secure, and to keep the information on it private.
