The Database Server.  Shiny black case containing the nicest bit of hardware it has ever been my opportunity to get my hands on.<\/p>\n<p>For the record: dual 2.4GHz Pentium-IV Xeon processors, 2GB RAM, a 36GB system disk and a RAID-1 mirrored-pair of 72GB &#8216;data&#8217; disks for our databases.<\/p>\n<p>The standard <a href=\"http:\/\/www.debian.org\/\">Debian<\/a> installation CD doesn&#8217;t have a driver for the RAID controller &#8211; found a nice network-installation image containing the &#8216;aacraid&#8217; driver and got it all installed this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>With all the kernel vulnerabilities kicking around at the moment, will probably try to put 2.4.25 on it, once the source tree is packaged for Debian &#8211; hopefully over the weekend, because a 30MB download from work is painful.  Remember that 64K line shared between 50 people? Yep, still got that.  It&#8217;s always easier to download the files at home and take them to work the following day.  Memo to self: Must remember to compile in support for the RAID controller.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll be putting both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysql.org\/\">MySQL<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.postgresql.org\/\">PostgreSQL<\/a> on it &#8211; we have a lot of existing MySQL stuff and new stuff is going into Postgres &#8211; plus <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apache.org\/\">Apache<\/a> to run some rather nice database management scripts that my colleague has written.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It arrived yesterday.
