Yet another Internet Explorer security vulnerability – the only twist with this one is that there is no fix! It’s laughably easy to be infected too – you view an infected web site – yes, that’s right, you just visit the site – and you’re infected. The viral code exploits a security hole in Internet Explorer and there’s nothing you can do about it. This type of activity is often referred to as a drive-by download (cf drive-by shooting).
And, since there’s no existing fix for this problem, the only way to be sure of avoiding it is to stop using Internet Explorer.
Now is a good time to install Mozilla Firefox.
Good anti-virus software should stop this particular attack, but there’s currently no direct fix for the vulnerability.
Washington Post and BBC are reporting CERT says….
But I can’t find the actual reference to this on Cert’s web site….
anyone any clues
PermalinkThere seems to be a notification here …
Permalinkyes – thats the notication, but wheres the bit about CERT recommending users look at alternative browsers (as I hear the BBC are doing !!)
PermalinkHmm, good point – article mentions “CERT recommends that Explorer users consider other browsers”, but the quote is not attributed to anyone. I’m sure the text of the CERT advisory mentioned “use a different browser” as part of the “Solution” section, previously, but perhaps I was mistaken.
PermalinkExactly – everyone is quoting the article, but I can’t see anything on US-CERTS site to this effect. maybe I’ll google/search /. somemore..
