As a result of the ever increasing storage requirements at work, we have recently acquired one of these:
It’s a 16-bay storage array: contains up to 16 SATA-II hard disks, which can be configured into a number of RAID arrays and presented on to up to two SCSI chains to other systems. Our plan right now is to have two RAID-5 arrays consisting of five 300GB SATA disks each, giving just over 1TB of space in each array (RAID-5 ‘loses’ the capacity of one disk per array in order to provide you with redundancy in the event of a failed drive: check the theory …)
This box also has redundant hot-swappable fans and redundant hot-swappable power-supply units. And, and this was the clincher when opting for this particular model, it has loads of blue LEDs on the front.
In short, it is extremely, extremely shiny.
There’s several people reselling these as OEM’s, trantec are a major one in the UK.
Anyway my toy this week was a new 4 core SUN T2000. ALOM is very nice, but the thing is hugely noisey…
