Ramblings about stuff

All Systems Normal

Everything seems to be returning to normal. I’ve got control of sungate.co.uk back finally and it all seems to work. The lesson here seems to be that if you want to get your ISP to do something manual and boring that isn’t going to earn them any money, don’t expect them to touch it over the weekend.

And I’ve got www.sungate.co.uk nicely configured now, using virtual hosts and redirects with the Apache web server.

Work-wise … things have been a little frustrating – the shiny new rack server that we’ve bought to run the AMANDA backups arrived on Monday, but it didn’t work. Didn’t boot up properly, couldn’t see the SCSI hard drive and it kept just switching itself off. Managed to get into the BIOS and saw that the CPU temperature was up to about 80°C and the CPU fan appeared to not be spinning. That is, of course, Very Wrong. Couldn’t be bothered to investigate the problem myself and so persuaded the supplier to pick up the box and take it away. Supplier sent their PFY up to collect it. Diagnosis from yesterday was that the SCSI cable had come loose and had become entangled in the CPU fan, thus causing both problems we were seeing. Sounds reasonable, and we get the box back today.

So, let’s boot it up …

Errors in the SCSI boot-up sequence relating to the SCSI termination – continues to boot but it’s clearly not behaving properly.

Conversation with supplier ensues and it is decided that the fault must lie either with the SCSI controller, the SCSI cable or the SCSI terminator (which is actually the SCSI hard drive). Supplier has promised to ship replacements for all those parts by tomorrow.

So, fingers crossed, eh?
