Interplanetary bandwidth

According to a NASA press release, the Spirit Rover is transmitting data back from Mars at 128 kilobits per second. I am somewhat bemused by the fact that this is double the bandwidth that our offices have to the outside world.

😯

Oh, and for a completely pointless distraction for today, try Smack The Pingu. See how far you can hit the penguin. You have 577.2 metres to beat!

  1. hmm bandwidth….we had 128k at the office till April, then droppedthe managed VPN (do it ourselves) and did sDSL at the remote end, E1 at HQ and viola saved £6k a year.

I’m surprised that your HQ haven’t figured out VPN’s yet…but thinking about it maybe I’m not.

  2. They’re talking about it at the moment, actually, but the legal wrangling over various things is pushing the installation date towards our ‘leaving for new premises’ horizon. At which point we’ll have a 100Mb connection to the University network 🙂
