Daddy, It’s SNOWING!

“Daddy, it’s snowing!” came the voice on the phone. Despite the enjoyment that the small person in question was undoubtedly getting, I groaned and realised that it would be a nightmare cycling home. And I was right.

Snow started at about 1630 this afternoon and, leaving only about an hour later, it took about 50 minutes crawling along through the snow and slush. To be honest, most other car-drivers, cyclists and pedestrians were being fairly sensible about it. The best place for me seemed to be in the middle of the car lane, as the road had been cleared a little. Cycle paths were a non-starter – all rutted with snow and ice.

On other matters, have been setting up our new AMANDA server. It’s got a whacking great big 250GB disk in it which needs LBA48 support for the operating system to see the whole disk, and the stock Debian kernels don’t include that. Just logged into the box remotely, configured the kernel, installed the new package, reconfigured LILO really carefully and rebooted the box. And that seems to have failed, because it hasn’t come back online. Oh well, at least it’s not doing anything important yet.

  3. Daddy its snowing – oh yeeeeessss came the reply.

Driving in snow is sooo much fun, even with only 2 wheel drive better with 4 wheel drive – off course it helps to have a fairly empty rd and no one panicking and doing 5mph in front….even when they’ve a Audi RS6 Quattro arrghhhhh!!!

As for amanda I really must plug in the 133mhz IDE card into our server and see the extra 20MB or so on our holding disk. DOne the hardwork of upgrading FreeBSD from 4.3 to 4.9 from source, so the hardware should be a doddle – cough:-)
