Ramblings about stuff

Day One, new premises

So, first ‘proper’ day at the new premises along with all the rest of the ‘normal’ staff. Brief synopsis:

  • Bike ride in reasonable conditions took 42 minutes getting to work, and 36 minutes getting home at the end of day (discrepancy due to the previously-mentioned Sodding Great Hill at the ‘work’ end of the route);
  • A very successful day on the network front: all the Netware servers brought online, most of the various Linux boxes too. And I have a sensibly-working PC myself, too, which always helps. We have our Debian package cache online, although it’s open to debate whether it’s actually worthwhile since we now have a 100-megabit link to the University’s Debian mirror 🙂 … also, I configured the switches so that all the ports connected to individual machines (i.e. almost all of them) have no trunking, no channeling and ‘portfast’ set. This makes each machine’s connection start up quickly and is essential for making Netware/IPX work – I had a ‘heads up’ about this trick a while ago and it’s certainly helpful.
  • Since I’ve been concentrating on the network setup, I still haven’t unpacked any of the large crates of stuff that needs to go into the office: the office is pretty full and there are ten crates outside the office door which need to be unpacked too. I believe the empty crates are to be collected by the removals company on Wednesday, so that doesn’t give much time …

I will try to get some pictures of the new place up here soon.

Update 21:30 Ooh, and it looks like Debian Sarge has finally released. A symbolic day in more ways than one …
