Houston, we have Samba

Finally today, after many weeks of advance preparation and many days of intensive work, we put our Samba server live. Our clunky old Netware servers are being sent to Silicon Heaven. Perhaps Silicon Hell is a more appropriate destination, actually, given the trouble we’ve had with them recently, but…

Generally speaking, it has been a complete success. We tested the setup thoroughly enough to know that there were no show-stopper problems, but it was nice to see that Everything Just Worked As We Planned. Spent the day fixing up a few minor permissions conflicts, which was inevitable given the migration from the old Netware trustees model to the new Unix-based permissions model; I think that’s mostly sorted now. Most staff were just able to carry on as normal and not really notice the difference, since it’s all “behind the scenes” to them: this is the whole point. We didn’t want to make it look different: just be faster for everyone and easier to admin for me 🙂

I am now officially Completely Knackered after having spent almost all of the past week getting this working: whole days at work and also moderate chunks of time at home in the evenings and at weekends. I’ve been biking again following the wrist recovery, with no ill-effects, even if I did have to face my arch-nemesis, That Hill.

I’m planning on spending the next couple of days fixing the remaining teething troubles with the new setup, then to have a couple of days off.

Which Will Be Nice.

  1. Congratulations – I feel your pain having just done a move from one reporting server to another. But it’s great when it’s been done 🙂
