Possibly the best database server in the world

It arrived yesterday. The Database Server. Shiny black case containing the nicest bit of hardware it has ever been my opportunity to get my hands on.

For the record: dual 2.4GHz Pentium-IV Xeon processors, 2GB RAM, a 36GB system disk and a RAID-1 mirrored-pair of 72GB ‘data’ disks for our databases.

The standard Debian installation CD doesn’t have a driver for the RAID controller – found a nice network-installation image containing the ‘aacraid’ driver and got it all installed this afternoon.

With all the kernel vulnerabilities kicking around at the moment, will probably try to put 2.4.25 on it, once the source tree is packaged for Debian – hopefully over the weekend, because a 30MB download from work is painful. Remember that 64K line shared between 50 people? Yep, still got that. It’s always easier to download the files at home and take them to work the following day. Memo to self: Must remember to compile in support for the RAID controller.

We’ll be putting both MySQL and PostgreSQL on it – we have a lot of existing MySQL stuff and new stuff is going into Postgres – plus Apache to run some rather nice database management scripts that my colleague has written.

  1. prob best to get an extra 36GB disk for the system disk too..otherwise you know which disk will die first don’t ya!.
