One week off and the virus has run riot …

Given that the W32/Gibe-F virus messages were coming in at 5 or 6 every hour, I was slightly concerned about what Being Away For Five Days would do to my email accounts. Five days worth of messages at 5 or 6 per hour makes around 5*24*5 = 600 messages. At 150K in size each, that’s… (read more)

I’ve got how many new messages?

So, the virus W32/Gibe-F is now doing the rounds. It arrives as an infected email, usually looking like a Microsoft Security announcement (they never send these sort of announcements, by the way). There’s a story about it on BBC news. I have received over 150 such virus-ridden emails since first thing yesterday – an arrival… (read more)

At the main reception desk he probably… (read more)

Too good to be true

The Hansol bloke didn’t show up today. My faith in the Inefficient Service Society has been restored.

Whoops, there goes my hard disk, vicar!

It’s like a West End farce, honestly. What a week. What follows is only a brief outline of the main events … A couple of weeks ago, desktop computers A and B (situated in the same office) fail on the same day. On investigation the diagnosis was “System A has a dead motherboard and System… (read more)

Mozilla evangelism

Did a seminar/talk/thing at work last week about Mozilla stuff, mainly concentrating on the fact that I soon plan to roll out a copy of Mozilla Firebird to be the default web browser on every desktop. Interest was generally high. People liked the idea of tabbed-browsing and popup-blocking. Also did a short bit about Mozilla… (read more)

Blaster suspect

Apparently the FBI have a suspect for the recent Blaster worm. Plenty of discussion about the case at Slashdot, as usual.

Farewell then, Mr Campbell

Following my previous note about Alastair Campbell, it seems that he is to resign.

If only Alastair Campbell had read this

I was amused to read this article which describes how the British government have got into trouble by failing to appreciate that Microsoft Word documents contain a lot of hidden data, especially when edited by a number of different authors. If only they had read my article about Wny Microsoft Word can be bad for… (read more)
